Buzzer-Beater Gives UA Boys 2-OT Win Over Coffman

Upper Arlington, OH – The inbounds pass with 4.2 seconds remaining in the second overtime went to the worst spot possible on the floor. Both plays drawn up in the huddle moments earlier were blown up. But when all else fails, it sure helps to have a 6-foot-8 sharpshooter hovering at the three-point line to take the game-winning shot.

“Things didn’t go exactly as we planned, but as soon as I got the ball in my hand and put it up, I thought it was going in,” said sophomore Alex Smith, whose three-pointer a millisecond before the buzzer sounded gave Upper Arlington a 52-50 win over Dublin Coffman Friday

Senior Nate Schoeny scored 25 points and Smith added to pace UA (7-3, 2-2), which trailed by eight with 2:18 remaining in regulation. That’s when Schoeny hit two monster three-pointers at the same spot just in front of the Golden Bears student section.

After a timeout UA went to Schoeny one more time in his favorite spot. He drew a foul by Quinn Hart. He missed the first free throw, but made the second and third to force overtime.

“You’re talking to us, but Zach Corna (who didn’t score) deserves a lot of credit for all the great defense he played tonight, mostly guarding McClure, who is one of the best point guards in the conference,” Schoeny said. “I hit some shots, but our defense really delivered at several key points when they seemed to be in control.”

All-Guard Lineup Proves Golden For UA In Win Over Liberty

Powell, OH – On rare occasions in practice when the Upper Arlington boys basketball team is lacking in energy, focus, discipline, crispness and teamwork – hallmarks of the tradition-rich program – first-year coach Joe Bills delivers his players a blunt lesson in recent history.

“I remind them that we didn’t win a game in the league last year,” said Bills with a sly grin. “That usually gets their attention.”

The OCC Central is brutal with defending Central champ Olentangy Orange, Bradley, Liberty, Dublin Coffman, UA and Hilliard Davidson being tough outs on any given night.

Boys Basketball: Inside duo guides Upper Arlington past Worthington Christian

An early injury to one of its top players didn’t derail the Upper Arlington boys basketball team during its matchup against Worthington Christian on Monday in the 5 C’s Classic at Capital University.

The way Laken Rex, a 6-7 senior, stepped in to create a dual mountain inside for the Golden Bears proved to be a big reason they came away with a 66-53 victory.

“If we play physical, strong and focused, our size can be a problem for people,” UA coach Joe Bills said. “It was definitely an advantage we thought we’d have today, outside of Samuel Johnson. I thought Laken came in and did a great job. He came off the bench with Weston Gregg getting hurt early in the game. Laken’s a senior and he was ready. He stayed focused, and it was next man up. Weston’s another talented young man.”

Joe Bills Named Head Coach of UA Boys Basketball

After six seasons as a UA assistant, Joe Bills is embracing the chance to take over a program that has been one of the Columbus area’s best over the past two decades.

Bills will succeed Tim Casey, who directed the program that won 355 games in 22 seasons.

Coach Bills is 80-66 as a head coach, including a 58-41 stint at DeSales from 2013-17 that was highlighted by a Division II regional runner-up finish in 2016 and a 20-25 record at Fisher Catholic from 2011-13.

Bills was a four-year starter at Zanesville Rosecrans from 1995-99 and played for Wright State from 1999-2003. Joe and Megan Bills; the parents of Harrison, 4, and Annabelle, 2 — both are English teachers at UA.

“The role as head coach at Upper Arlington requires you to honor the past and build on the tradition Coach Casey built,” Bills said. “All I can do now is build on that foundation.”
